Cyber Attack Disrupts Halliburton Operations

What happened?

On august 21st, Halliburton, the US second largest energy services firm, confirmed that they had been a victim of a cyberattack that had a significant impact on their operations, the attack affected mainly their Houston campus, and in a minor extent to other locations across the globe.

What products are affected?

Part of the systems of the company were affected by this attack, along with part of their internal network. So far, there are no indications that the reported issue has affected the energy services.

Is there a mitigation patch or update?

To mitigate the possible impact that the cyberattack has had on their organization, the company isolated their systems and internal networks while the organization conducts a proper investigation to determine the impact of the issue.

Think you’ve been exposed?

Even when the specifics of the issue remain to be disclosed, this situation is similar to another set of cyber attacks conducted to Colonial Pipeline, MGM and Clorox, which highlights a critical truth: many attacks exploit basic oversights rather than highly sophisticated techniques, taking advantage of simple and preventable errors.

Mistakes, misconfigurations and the lack of periodic tests might lead to security gaps in any organization.
